Our work in 2008
Alongside our key concerns of poverty, place and empowerment four themes will shape everything we do in 2008.
- Understanding and supporting the growing ethnic, racial and religious diversity of communities across the UK;
- meeting the challenge of environmental sustainability;
- supporting the development of a healthy, innovative and genuinely independent voluntary sector;
- understanding the different approaches to policy and practice in each of the four countries of the UK.
Special theme for 2008: social evils
In 1904, Joseph Rowntree founded the trusts that bear his name, saying:
"I feel that much of the current philanthropic effort is directed to remedying the more superficial manifestations of weakness or evil, while little thought is directed to searching out their underlying causes."
In 2007 JRF launched a new inquiry into the nature of social evil in the 21st century. We have talked to the general public, to vulnerable groups of people whose voices often go unheard and to policy-makers, practitioners and leaders in the voluntary sector. We have now heard what people think are today’s social problems and are analysing the underlying reasons for these. In 2008 we will explore and share the issues raised.
