Tony is Chair of Trustees for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. He is a member of the Competition Commission and editor of the Friends Quarterly.
A media historian and a doctoral student at Bournemouth University, he has recently published a history of Independent Radio in the UK, Sounds of Your Life.
He was Chief Executive of The Radio Authority until it was subsumed into Ofcom in 2003, where he helped to set up the new regulator. He had been previously Managing Director of Tyrrell and Green department store, as a principal director of the John Lewis Partnership.
Tony is a Quaker, with keen interests in music, cricket and sailing. He is married with two children and five grandchildren, and lives in Winchester.
