As part of our programme of work on Globalisation, UK poverty and communities, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) brought together current evidence about how people's work, lives and local areas are all affected by globalisation. Three new reports were launched at a seminar on 4 March:

Globalisation, labour markets and communities in contemporary Britain
Danny MacKinnon et al., University of Glasgow

The impact of the global economic downturn on communities and poverty in the UK
Bridget Byrne et al., Institute of Development Studies and partners

The impact of overseas conflict on UK communities
Michael Collyer et al., University of Sussex

Speakers and panel members were:

  • Dr Ian Goldin, Director, Oxford Martin School, Oxford University
  • Cllr Richard Kemp, Vice Chairman of the Local Government Association and Liberal Democrat Group Leader
  • Pasha Shah, Chair of Peacemakers
  • Kate Wareing, Director of UK Poverty, Oxfam GB

The session was introduced and chaired by Mark Easton, Home Editor for the BBC; Bharat Mehta, Trustee of JRF and Chief Executive, Trust for London; and Emma Stone, Director of Policy and Research at JRF.

As part of this programme of work we have also produced a short film that explores people's experiences of and views on globalisation.
