Phoenix Cities book launch

Tuesday, March 16, 2010
18:00 hrs - 20:00 hrs
London School of Economics

About the event

This event will discuss the fortunes of cities surviving the financial, social and environmental turmoil in Europe and the US.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, LSE Housing & Communities, CASE and LSE Cities invite you to a lecture, debate and the launch of a new book, Phoenix Cities: the fall and rise of great industrial cities by Anne Power, Jörg Plöger and Astrid Winkler.

'Phoenix Cities' tracks the regeneration and recovery of seven European cities following major industrial decline since the post war period and examining their turn-around since. The European experience shows progress in many of the cities. The American experience shows slower, more uncertain recovery. This book will provide much that is original and promising to all those wanting to understand the ground-level realities of urban change and progress.

This event is free but booking is essential. To request a seat for this event, please contact Anna Tamas at LSE: a.tamas@lse.ac.uk

The book will be on sale at the event for a discounted price. Alternatively, you can purchase the book from The Policy Press.

Testimonials

As we embark on a new era of urbanism, based on resilience, equity and sustainability, there's so much to learn from these 'Boom, Bust and Recover' case studies. A hugely insightful piece of work.
(Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director, Forum for the Future)

It is vital that urban policy-makers learn the right lessons from past failures - and past successes. This new book is a rich source for anyone who cares about the future of cities.
(Howard Davies, Director, London School of Economics and Political Science)
