Programme summary

Funding on the Drug and Alcohol Research Programme (DARP) has now ceased.

The DARP was set up in 2001 and was originally initiated as a three-year programme of social research on drug - and alcohol -related issues. In 2003 it was decided to extend the programme and to create a 'Single Programme Committee', to recommend funding decisions to trustees (among other tasks). The Drug and Alcohol Research Committee (DARC), chaired by Dame Ruth Runciman, was therefore set up with this purpose and has considered all funding decisions from 2003 to 2005, when funding ceased.

Much of the research funding by the DARC is ongoing. Information on these current projects can be found here:

A new programme of research on alcohol

Trustees have decided to switch the focus of JRF work from a predominant emphasis on controlled drugs to a new programme devoted to research on alcohol issues. A new committee will be formed to oversee this work. This committee and early plans for the programme will be developed over the course of 2006 and the first full funding year will be 2007. This programme is expected to run over the course of 2007-2009.
