Carmelite Street - Designing the 21st century office: A competition for a new workspace in York

Carmelite illustrationThe architectural and developers' plans of five finalists from a JRF competition to design an innovative office complex are included in this e-book.

In 2001, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation launched a competition to secure an innovative design for an office building on a neglected inner city site.

The brief was to:

  • explore new and emerging ideas for office work in the 21st century (including innovative building techniques and sustainability)
  • encourage development in a run-down area
  • establish a contemporary design appropriate to a historic city
  • ensure the commercial success of the site

The creative and original ideas resulting from this process, including plans, artists’ impressions, and financial appraisals, are accompanied in this volume by the competition brief and the assessor’s report.
