Derwenthorpe – the facts at a glance:
- Derwenthorpe will be located on the east side of York between the existing communities of Osbaldwick, Heworth and Tang Hall.
- The village will have 540 homes, including 135 to rent, 79 in part ownership, and homes for sale at varying prices.
- Homes for rent and low-cost ownership will be undistinguishable from the homes for outright sale and will be scattered amongst them, meaning there is no segregation.
- The village will be managed and maintained by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), which has 100 years’ experience of managing a mixed-income community at New Earswick.
- All residents will share in some decision-making responsibilities for the community as a whole.
- Each home will be energy-efficient, with a minimum rating of ‘Eco Homes Very Good’.
- Every home will have ‘Lifetime Homes’ features, making it accessible to people of all needs and ages. Extra provision will be made for those with severe disabilities.
- JRHT aims to reduce the dependence on car ownership through regular bus services, a car club and a cycle path linked to wider cycle networks.
- A community fund has been set aside for facilities that will benefit residents and the wider community, who will be actively involved in deciding what these facilities should be.
- Derwenthorpe will include 20 acres of green space, including ponds, trees (existing and new), retained hedgerows, a designated wildlife habitat and play areas for children.
