MDS - Residential Assessment Instrument

Minimum Data Set (MDS) has been developed by InterRAI, a collaboration of gerontologists, academics and health care professionals from over 20 countries, all of which are committed to improving the quality of assessments and the provision of care.

It is a unique care assessment tool, which has been approved by the UK government for use as part of the Single Assessment Process. MDS uses the minimum amount of data needed to take into account all aspects of an individual's life, to determine physical, emotional and social needs. It can be used in a variety of settings from home care through to acute nursing care in order to:

  • identify the needs of the individual
  • assist in the formulation of holistic and comprehensive care plans
  • determine staffing levels and skill gaps.
