Two £50,000 Journalist Fellowships - one for 1997 and one for 1998 - have been awarded to writers on the Independent newspaper.
Nicholas Schoon, Environment Correspondent, and Christian Wolmar, Whitehall Correspondent, have received the awards from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to write books on subjects of particular concern to them and to the Foundation.
Nick Schoon will write about how to get the economically independent to live in inner city areas and to stay there. Christian Wolmar's book will examine the scandal of abuse in children's homes over the past two or three decades and will attempt to suggest ways in which better residential care for children could be provided in the future.
The books will be published in 1999/2000. Two further Journalist Fellowships will be awarded by the JRF for 1999 and for 2000.
