Twelve members of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust have obtained the new Joseph Rowntree Foundation Certificate in Care, developed by the Trust due to the inadequacies of current qualifications. The Certificate has been developed to equip staff with the changing skills required in Care Homes of the future. It provides an opportunity for experienced care workers to gain considerable knowledge and insights to update their skills and advance their practice to meet ever changing demands, as the dependency of residents in some areas becomes greater.
All JRHT Care Staff who undertook the course during 1996 were successful in achieving certificates at University Foundation course level despite none having studied at University level before. Candidates were of varying seniority, including Deputy Managers, Senior Care Workers, Care Workers and a Night Care Worker, and their ages ranged from 21 to 51. Eight already had NVQ level 3, three had NVQ level 2 and one had no recognised care qualification.
JRHT Director, Cedric Dennis, said "The benefits of the Certificate in Care are clearly demonstrated by the enhanced knowledge and quality of the delivery of care provided by these people."
