JRF appoints new Director of Research

1 May 2002

Anne Harrop, a Principal Research Officer in the Cabinet Office, is to be the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s new Director of Research. She will take up her post at the end of June. The current Director, Dr Janet Lewis, retires at the end of July.

Anne Harrop, whose home is in York, has worked in the Government’s Centre for Management and Policy Studies since January where her job involves identifying and disseminating good practice in policy making. She previously worked at the Department for Work and Pensions, where she was Deputy Chief Research Officer on a temporary promotion.

She joined the Civil Service in 1993 after six years as a Research Fellow working on family change and Britain’s ageing population at the University of London’s Thomas Coram Research Unit and the Institute of Gerontology at Kings College.

Lord Best, the JRF Director, said: “Janet Lewis has been the guiding hand on the Foundation’s research programme through sixteen momentous years during which the scale of our activities has expanded beyond recognition. We will miss her hugely.”

“Anne Harrop will be coming to us with the reputation of a high flyer in the Civil Service as well as a track record in social research and the implementation of research messages in policy making. We very much look forward to working with her.”
