JRF awards two journalist fellowships

2 January 2003

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has awarded two fellowships of £50,000 each to journalists that will enable them to write books on social policy topics during the coming year.

Chosen by judges from a strong field of more than 50 applicants, they are:

  • Madeleine Bunting, a columnist with The Guardian, whose book (working title: Willing Slaves) will examine the prevailing ‘long-hours’ workplace culture among British companies and organisations.
  • Jean Rafferty, a freelance writer based in Glasgow who has worked for a number of broadsheet and tabloid newspapers. Her book (working title: Disposable Women) will be about prostitutes and prostitution in Britain.

Kenneth Dixon, Chair of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s Trustees, said: “Our judges had a difficult time deciding which projects should receive awards from a very strong field. However, the winning proposals were particularly impressive on paper and at interview when they were defended by their would-be authors with real passion. We are confident that the result of these fellowships will be striking and strongly-argued books, that are likely to appear in print during 2004, which will be the Foundation’s centenary year.”
