Launch of ‘good kids’ scheme on York Estate

29 October 2004

A scheme to reward young people for helping out in their community will be launched in York on Friday 29 October. Young people living in New Earswick will be able to earn points, through activities such as dog-walking, litter-collecting, and helping out at community events, which they can save to claim rewards, for example, meals out and trips to the cinema and visitor attractions.

The scheme, devised by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, includes adult volunteers to oversee the activities and rewards. It aims to highlight the positive contribution that young people can make to their community, and provide an opportunity for their efforts to be recognised.

The scheme’s first members, who will receive their membership cards at Friday’s event, have named the scheme HOTEY - ‘Helping others to enjoy yourself’.

Jacquie Dale, Head of Housing and Community Services at the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust said: “We tend to hear only about the negative aspects of young people’s behaviour - this project recognises that the vast majority of young people not only care about and for their communities but that they are happy to make a positive contribution. The rewards that young people earn are a way of acknowledging this contribution.”
