The Government's plan to establish a General Social care Council was welcomed tonight (mon) by Sir William Utting, former Chief Inspector of Social Services and a Trustee of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Sir William, who headed the Government's recent review of safequards for children in care said: "The promotion of high standards of ethical conduct and professional competence are central to the provision of social services. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has supported the development of work on creating a General Social Care Council for more than a decade and I am delighted that it is now an imminent prospect."
Don Brand, Director of the General Social Care Council Development Project, funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation and based at the National Institute for Social Work, said: "The proposals will benefit service users by giving them a clear statement of what they can expect from staff. They will also benefit the vast majority of staff, who are trying to do a good job, by giving them a published national statement of the standards to which they are working."
