11 December 2002

Care workers, Andrea Peel, Joanne King and Val Ellis, received national recognition for their training achievements at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 5 December. Andrea has been named Care Practitioner of the Year, Joanne named the Care Manager of the Year, and Val has received the Keith Matthews Memorial Award given for achievement in residential care for adults with mental health problems. Another worker, Giles Dearing has been highly commended in the Young Care Professional of the Year category. All four work at care homes in York for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT).

The Care Choices Care Training Excellence Awards are awarded annually to workers in care homes who have shown strong commitment and progress in their own training and development whilst continuing to make an excellent personal contribution to their workplace. The York winners’ achievements are as follows:

  • Andrea, who works with people with special needs, has completed the JRF Certificate in Care and NVQ Level 4 and is currently working towards a City and Guilds teaching qualification.
  • Joanne started out as a Care Assistant but has gone on to attain Registered Nurse status. She now manages Lamel Beeches, a residential care home for Older People in York. She has just completed a City and Guilds teaching qualification.
  • Val, a Registered Mental Nurse, specialises in helping people with dementia. She has completed a York University diploma course in the mental health needs of older people and has developed an assessment tool to measure people’s dementia needs.
  • Giles joined the JRHT as a Modern Apprentice. He has obtained the JRF Certificate in Care, NVQ Levels 2 and 3 and is currently being sponsored by his employer through nurse training.
  • Andrea, Joanne and Val will each receive a cheque for £500 and a certificate.

Cedric Dennis, Director of Care Services for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust said: “I am delighted that the excellent work done by our care home staff has been recognised in this way. I am also pleased that the awards acknowledge the part that our innovative training programme has played in helping our staff to provide high levels of care and service for our residents. As always, we are keen to share our training methods and skills with other providers.”
