Babies and toddlers are getting a flying start in their early learning through a series of innovative group sessions being held at New Earswick Folk Hall. The sessions are designed to support parents and other carers, such as grandparents, as their children’s first and most important educators.
A dozen families have taken part in the weekly sessions of storytelling, singing, craft activities and opportunities to share books. Parents are able to learn new activities and ideas for using with their children at home.
The sessions, run by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, form part of a programme known as PEEP (Peers Early Education Partnership), named after the Oxford based organisation that established it. The programme, designed for children in the 0 to 5 years age group, looks to raise their self-esteem and help them feel good about learning in preparation for starting school.
The PEEP initiative has been introduced to New Earswick as part of Communities that Care, a neighbourhood programme designed to build safer communities where children and young people are valued.
Jacquie Dale, Head of Housing and Community Services at the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, said: "I am delighted that we are able to offer this programme to New Earswick families. The parents and carers who have participated are to be congratulated for showing great commitment to their children’s education from this early stage."
