A large proportion of Britains ethnic minority population lives in the major cities, often in the most deprived areas. Using data from the Fourth National Survey of Ethnic Minorities, this report identifies how personal characteristics influence where particular ethnic minority groups live and considers the roles of both choice and constraint in determining residential location.
It concludes that there are important differences between different ethnic minority groups and that urban policy must achieve a delicate balance between targeting help on deprived areas on the one hand and supporting ethnic minority communities on the other. The study explores the diversity of conditions among ethnic groups in Britains cities. It is clear that, beneath the general links between ethnicity and deprivation, there are not only major differences between groups but between different locations.
