Older people

Elderly man and woman in conversation.

Living longer is a cause for celebration but also brings challenges. We want to understand and improve the experiences of older people on many fronts. We draw on our research, our care operations through the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), and our work in Bradford.

Key messages

  • Involving older people in decisions that affect them is essential for improving service provision.
  • Older people are themselves major providers of support to other older people, and actively support families and communities.
  • Present funding for long-term care is incoherent, unfair and inadequate.
  • Residents value the independence and support offered by places like 'Continuing care retirement communities'. But we need more evidence about the cost-effectiveness of these settings and the quality of life there.
  • Most people prioritise meeting their own needs over passing on assets.
