New-style city-centre apartments: Competition finalists chosen

A panel of distinguished judges appointed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has chosen five teams of architects/developers/contractors /engineers to prepare a scheme design, with costings, for the first CASPAR development (City Centres Apartments for Single People at Affordable Rents). The chosen teams are listed below.

The judges are also listed below.

CASPAR developments are intended to attract middle income households to city centre locations, for social, economic and environmental reasons. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has set aside £2m to build at least one such development of up to fifty flats: it hopes that other investors, interested in rental property, will see the demand for this product and the investment potential, and will follow suit.

The site for the first CASPAR scheme has not yet been agreed. Negotiations are proceeding and the five chosen teams will be given approximately three months to prepare their schemes once the site is selected. Each is being awarded £5,000 for the preparation of their drawings and costings and each submission will be published in a JRF report; and the competition winner will be announced at the end of the year.
