There is a range of reasons for supporting the arts: for its own intrinsic quality, to create employment or to encourage economic development. This video, with its accompanying booklet, explores a further reason for supporting arts activities – their impact on community development – and begins to demonstrate what processes might be involved.
The video features six projects from the North of England and demonstrates how arts projects can lead to a significant energising of communities, either directly or indirectly through their impact on individuals. They provide insights into how cultural activities can be effective, but also raise a number of questions that need further exploration. The video runs for approximately 20 minutes.
