Getting a job, finding a home: Rural youth transitions

Julie Rugg and Anwen Jones

19 November 1999

How hard is it for young people to find both a job and a home in the countryside?
Policy discussion of housing need and unemployment has tended to focus on urban areas. This report examines the experiences of a group of young people in two rural areas of North Yorkshire. Despite coming from a broad mix of backgrounds, only a very small number had managed to set up their own home in the countryside.

The report looks in detail at interviewees' housing and employment backgrounds; their experience of living in the countryside; the problems they had balancing housing, work and transport issues; and how this affected their moving on to fully independent adult lives.
