Many people face a future of insecure employment, often in temporary and low-paid jobs. Unshackling the poor considers creative ways of relieving social and economic exclusion. The report examines new approaches to local economic development, going beyond current preoccupations with job creation, business development and training.
It looks in detail at four elements: the benefit system; the informal economy; voluntary action; and self-help activities. The author puts forward a series of suggestions to help unemployed people use these elements to maintain their household incomes, their skills and self-esteem.
