Programme summary
This JRF programme builds on existing research and has commissioned new work to examine political processes and a future perspective on the role of the frontline councillor. This programme has evolved from the Foundation’s longstanding interests in local government and community participation. We have undertaken a number of activities and events to feed our messages to appropriate policy makers. Many of these have been undertaken with nationally-based partners. This programme also links with the Foundation’s Governance and Public Services and Neighbourhoods Programmes.
Our commissioned work on political processes has looked at the role that frontline councillors play in decision making and the role that political parties can play in recruiting a more representative group of candidates to become councillors. Our final commissioned piece of work due to be looks at the future role of the frontline councillor. This is due to be published in Spring 2006 when this programme comes to an end.
