Housing and neighbourhoodsThis programme is concerned with 'place' issues. At the heart of this is the recognition that a secure affordable home, in a neighbourhood which improves rather than limits life chances, is fundamental to personal wellbeing. |

Programme summary
Our remit is to understand the causes of, and seek solutions to, 'place' based deprivation within the UK. Place is broadly defined to include a focus on the home, immediate neighbourhood and the wider locality within which people's homes and daily lives are located.
We recognise that a secure, affordable home in a safe neighbourhood which improves life chances is fundamental to personal wellbeing.
We are concerned with:
- the changing geography of poverty and affluence in the UK, including factors affecting the segregation of particular groups of people or communities into disadvantaged areas;
- factors affecting the quality of neighbourhood and place;
- the dynamics of poverty and place including groups' and individuals' experiences of poverty linked to place and the extent to which 'neighbourhood effects' impact on their life chances and wellbeing;
- the implication of place for particularly marginalised or socially excluded groups;
- factors and interventions that reduce both place-based poverty and enhance people's life chances;
- factors affecting housing and neighbourhood quality and affordability;
- solutions that regenerate places, including where there is appropriate sharing of learning from practice within the devolved administrations.
We are also interested in projects that involve people with lived experiences of projects' research topics in the design, implementation and dissemination of the work we fund.
More details about this programme - including a breakdown of our current work programmes, projects funded under open calls, and policy and practice development work (Word, 333KB) - are available.
