Programme summary
This programme aims to improve our evidence base in relation to parenting. It was funded because of:
- the importance of parenting in children's lives and their future life chances; and
- the need to respond to diversity and disadvantage in families and family life on the basis of understanding rather than assumption.
The programme is primarily concerned with 'ordinary families' rather than those with particular needs.
Aim
The programme aims to challenge or question some of the assumptions that underlie current policy and practice, and to consider the extent to which services can address the range of parents' needs and to promote different, but equally good, models of parenting.
To achieve this we want to improve our understanding of diversity in parenting and to consider the implications of this for how parenting is supported and assessed in public policy and practice.
In addition, it aims to explore the implications of differences in parents' attitudes and practices for inequalities in outcomes for children.
