York Committee

The York Committee of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation meets four times a year (February, May, July and October), and its aim is to make grants to organisations to help improve the general quality of life in York, with particular regard for those who are in any way disadvantaged. Grants typically range from £100 to £5,000.

The Foundation's York Committee makes modest grants in response to applications from charities and other voluntary and not-for-profit organisations. When considering applications for grants, it gives priority to applications which fit with the Foundation's main areas of interest

people experiencing poverty and disadvantage
the homes and communities in which they live
the services and support that foster their well-being and citizenship

Any size of group is considered and Trustees prefer to support specific needs rather than contribute to general expenses or on-going salaries.

Grants are given to charities and other not-for-profit organisations in the area covered by the City of York Council.

Grants are not normally given to:

Animal welfare groups
Archaeological work
Individuals
Routine maintenance or construction of buildings*
Medical research
Overseas visits or overseas holidays
Substitute for public funding that has been withdrawn

* Howevever, applications will be considered for improvements to buildings which will make them fit for purpose.

Support is not usually given to the same organisation in successive years.
