Poverty rates in families with a disabled person

Disabled people’s poverty rates slowly decreased until 2009/10 to 2011/12 but this trend has reversed. Poverty is much higher for people in families with disabled members.

The poverty rate for people in a family with disabled family members fell from 37% of people in 1999/00 to a low of 28% in 2011/12, before rising again to 30% in 2017/18.

In contrast, the poverty rate for people in a family with no disabled family members is much lower at19% of people in 2017/18, which is 12 percentage points lower than for people in a family with disabled family members. This gap is similar in 1995/96 at 13 percentage points, although the gap increased to a peak of 16 percentage points in 1999/2000 and then decreased to 9 percentage points in 20011/12.
