“We know the solutions. Now we need to act.” – JRF responds to latest poverty figures in Scotland

Responding to the official Scottish annual Households below average income data released today, Jim McCormick, associate director (Scotland) of the independent Joseph Rowntree Foundation, said:

“It cannot be right that over 1 million people have been swept into poverty in Scotland, including one in four children. The Scottish Government has set ambitious targets, but as yet, there is little sign that the rising tide of child poverty is being turned.

“The UK and Scottish Government must do significantly more to loosen the grip of poverty. Our housing, social security and employment policies must be designed to help people navigate the headwinds of financial insecurity. The proposed income supplement has the potential to provide that security and must be implemented with urgency.

“We know the solutions. Now we need to act.”
