Contemporary patterns of residential mobility in relation to social housing in England

Roger Burrows

This report offers a statistical analysis of recent movements into, within and out of social housing. It confirms that the social and economic base of the sector is becoming narrower.

Households new to social housing have very different characteristics to those leaving individually and in combination. Also the rate of movement within the sector has increased while the sector itself becomes smaller. This report argues that these trends - 'residualisation' and greater 'churning' - make it harder to sustain stable communities.
