The nature and impact of student demand on housing markets

Student numbers have increased substantially but higher education institutions have often failed to keep pace with an expanded demand for accommodation.

This report presents findings from an 18-month study of the impact of student demand on local housing markets. It characterises the nature of growing student numbers in the private rented sector, and assesses the impact of this growth on other renters and on housing markets generally. The authors conclude that the need to house students has implications for housing policy at national and local level.
