This study explores ways of assessing care home residents who may be eligible for nursing care.

From April 2003, the NHS will be responsible for funding the nursing care of all residents of care homes in England. By April 2003 Primary Care Trusts and local councils must have completed the assessment of all residents who may be eligible, to determine the level of re-imbursement under the registered nurse contribution to care (RNCC).

The study looks at whether a combination of the Minimum Data Set/Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS/RAI) and Resource Utilisation Groups Version 3 (RUG-III) systems could help determine the RNCC of care home residents. The work will be of interest Primary Care Trusts, local councils and care home providers.
