Community development has been an important, and often effective, part of social policy in Britain since the 1960s.

The Community Development Foundation (CDF) has been involved in many of the major developments in the field over this period. David Thomas, a former Chief Executive of CDF, has drawn on the organisation's extensive archives and his own wide experience to review the position of community development in the 1990s.
