This paper aimed to identify only empirical research published since 2007 and concentrated on research conducted and published within the UK.

The review:

  • Identified that there is little research on how wider socio-economic factors influence users' experiences or professional strategies; new research on issues of gender focus more on practitioners than service-user perspectives.
  • Found that studies draw attention to the tensions and dilemmas professionals experience when trying to balance a positive approach to risk with their statutory duties to protect service users.
