This concept paper finds out what is really new about immigration in 2005 by comparing it with immigration to the UK thirty years ago.

The paper highlights many continuities and changes in patterns and experiences of migration to the UK. The writers argue for race relations practices to be more inclusive of new immigrants. They also suggest that the promotion of community cohesion needs to be faster in order to respond to the specific needs of new immigrants.
